Itinerary

Day 1Arrival to Paro and drive to Thimphu

  • Arrival by plane at the Paro airport, followed by a 1.5-hour drive to Thimphu, or, if arriving by land, a day drive from Phuentsholing. Programmed according to arrival time. Evening tour of the king’s and government’s seat, the Tashicho Dzong castle.

Day 2Thimphu-Haa

  • Drive to Buddha Dordenma, the enormous statue of the Buddha atop a valley, in the early morning, and then go to a stunning city viewpoint. See the Memorial Chorten, which is constantly crowded with worshippers.
  • The traffic cops are signaling at intersections as you walk down Norzin Lam Street. The only capital city in the world without traffic lights is Thimphu. Finish your walk at the handicraft market, where you may find and purchase many wonderful Bhutanese mementos for a fair price. Take a trip to Changlimithang Stadium to watch a bout of the national sport of Bhutan.
  • You can also travel to Centenary Market, where locals go to buy their groceries, from Friday through Sunday. The market’s section for handmade goods is interesting. Otherwise, you can take advantage of some free time to wander around the town on your own.
  • Drive to the Haa valley in the late afternoon using the picturesque route from Chuzom. As a guest of a local family, you will spend the night in a nearby farmhouse where you can sample local specialties like salty butter tea and ara spirit. Although the lodging options are basic, the experience is worthwhile. If you don’t like the idea of using basic facilities, you might choose to spend the night in a hotel. Hot stone baths, a traditional Bhutanese delight, are an evening option.

Day 3Haa-Paro

  • Visit the Lhakhang Karpo (white temple), the village’s principal temple, in the morning. then take a short hike up to Juneydrak hermitage from Katsho village. This tiny temple located on a rocky outcrop is known as the “second Tiger’s Nest.” You might require a support from the rope that is fixed here as the last ascent to this temple is exceedingly steep. Two hospitable hermits who live there will show you around the area.
  • The highest motorable pass in Bhutan, Chele-la (3850 m), is the next destination. In clear conditions, you might be able to glimpse sacred Jomolhari peak to the north and Kanchenjunga mountain to the west. Take a car down to Paro.
  • Visit Dzongdrakha lhakhang, a temple erected beneath rocky cliffs with a beautiful view of Bondey village’s rice fields, if time allows. Only the Tiger’s Nest can compare to the beauty of this temple, which is hardly visited by tourists.

Day 4Paro

  • Visit the National Museum and Paro dzong (Rinpung dzong), the castle-monastery where the scenes for Bernardo Bertolucci’s Little Buddha were filmed. One of Bhutan’s two oldest temples was built in the immaculate Kyichu lhakhang.
  • The tour’s highlight is a climb to Taktsang Gomba (Tiger’s Nest). Despite how challenging the hike may seem, it is quite rewarding. You can climb halfway to the cafeteria, which has a wonderful perspective of the area, if you don’t feel very strong. According to the weather, your fitness level, and your preferences, you might think about climbing in the morning or early afternoon.

Day 5Departure

  • Drive to Drugyel dzong in the early morning if you have the time. From here, in clear weather, you may view the peak of the revered Jomolhari mountain. Fly out of Paro, or if you’re leaving by land, drive to Phuentsholing.
