Tour variations, Extensions and Combination

Start or finish in Paro (0 or more days): By taking the domestic aircraft that connects Yonphula Airport in Eastern Bhutan with Paro Airport in the West, you may simply begin or end your journey in Paro in Western Bhutan, where you can visit the well-known Tiger’s Nest monastery and other landmarks.

Merak-Sakteng (+2 to 4 days): Eastern Bhutan’s off-the-beaten-path trip has only recently been accessible to tourists. You can get a glimpse of the Borkpas’ way of life, a peculiar nomadic tribe distinguished by its carmine-colored jackets and tailed berets. You have two options: you can climb to Sakteng and stay in the land of the yeti longer, or you can just visit Merak hamlet and return to Tashigang the following evening. The hike is easy to moderately strenuous and includes a variety of cultural activities and interactions with the local population. For further information, see Best of Eastern Bhutan 8 Days.

Itinerary

Day 1Guwahati-Samdrup Jongkhar-Tashigang

  • You will be picked up in Guwahati at 5 o’clock in the morning and taken to Samdrup Jongkhar. Your driver and guide from Bhutan, who will take care of all immigration procedures, will be waiting for you here. You will next begin a daylong ascent to the Himalayas. We shall make a stop after a short drive to receive a Hindu hermit’s blessing for the safety of our travel. You will soon get the chance to see the first of many enchanting Zangto Pelri Lhakhang temples in Bhutan, which have intricated mural paintings. The National Handloom Development Project, which upholds a rich legacy of regional weaving, is the destination of your afternoon stop in the village of Khaling.
  • You’ll visit the National Institute for the Visually Impaired as well. The creation of the Bhutanese version of the Braille script is one of this modern institution’s accomplishments. You’ll also pass past Sherubtse College, the first campus of a Bhutanese university founded in 1978, and Karma Thegsum Dechenling Goemba, a large monastery school. Additionally, we go to a shrine in the nearby settlement of Kanglung. In the evening, arrive in Tashigang.

Day 2Tashigang-Trashiyangtse-Tshengkharla

  • Visit the Trashigang Dzong in the morning, which was constructed in the 17th century and boasts a commanding outlook of the valley. There are a few notable temples and regional government buildings inside. You will next need to drive to Trashi Yangtse for roughly two hours. Stop to the Gom Kora Temple along the journey to see the physical marks that the saint and magician Guru Padmasambhava left on the building. A longer trip will occasionally provide clear-weather vistas of snowy mountains. The historic Trashi Yangtse dzong, which houses 300 monks, is the last striking structure you will encounter. The monk Pema Lingpa founded the dzong, which served to guard a former trade route with Tibet.
  • The renowned Chorten Kora, the largest stupa in Bhutan constructed in Nepali style, is located next to the Trashi Yangtse. At the start of the year, two vibrant local festivals are held here. It is worthwhile to continue driving to the Bumdeling Bird Reserve farther to the north during the winter since, with any luck, you may see the uncommon Black Neck Cranes there. The National Institute for Zorig Chusum, a school where young people learn the skills and crafts of their ancestors to preserve Bhutan’s traditional arts, is located in Trashi Yangtse. After then, turn around and head back to Gom Kora before continuing on to Tshengkharla at a height of 2040m. You will camp here on your first night.

Day 3Tshengkharla-Omba

  • Trek 14 kilometers in 5 hours, ascend 500 m, and descend 540 m. The remnants of the dzong (castle), supposedly the first ever constructed in Bhutan by exiled Tibetan ruler Lhasey Tsangma in the ninth century, may be found near Tsengkharla. The trek begins here. We’ll bring a light packed lunch with us. You will pass through maize fields and around a number of temples on the crooked path. View Septshekhang Lhakahng on the rocky cliff as you travel. Finally, descend to Omba village through fields and a woodland. This is the basic hotel where you will stay the night (subject to availability, if rooms are out, you might need to camp). Visit a charming village and take in the beautiful scenery. Night halt at an elevation of 1920 meters above sea level.

Day 4Trek Omba-Jangphu

  • Travel 4-5 hours, 11 km, 440 m ascent, 200 m descent. Due to its comparable location on the steep cliff, Omba Nye, a monastery, is also known as the “Tiger’s Nest of the East.” You’re going to start your hike up there today. It is reported that the saint and magician Guru Rimpoche spent two months meditating here and vanquished the monster Phurba Trashi. On the path, there are many signs of Guru Rimpoche. After arriving at the temple, visit the holy locations before continuing to descend gradually and arriving at the settlement of Jangphu. You can stay the night here in a different farmhouse. Night halt at an elevation of 2130 meters.

Day 5Trek Jangphu-Gongza, Drive to Tashigang

  • Trekking 21 kilometers that takes 7-8 hours. It   will be a long day of walking to get back to the road. After passing through old Kheni town and across fields and forests, you’ll proceed to Gongza Gompa, another revered location situated next to the potent Gongri river. There are several intriguing artifacts to be found here, including the devil’s egg, Guru Rimpoche’s slipper, and the demon’s heart. At last, arrive at Doksum’s roadhead. When you arrive, the car will be waiting to take you back to Tashigang.

Day 6Tashigang-Samdrup Jongkhar and onward to Guwahati

  • From the Himalayas southward to the Indian border, this will be a daylong drive. Beginning early in the day, you will go past Yonphula Airport and Sherubtse college in the same direction you arrived on day One. Don’t forget to stop at Damthang before getting to Smadrup Jongkhar for additional blessing. When the immigration process is complete, you will bid your driver and guide in Bhutan farewell before being driven to Guwahati by your Indian equivalent. The concludes the tour.
