Itinerary

Day 1Arrival: Drive to Thimphu

  • Flight to the airport in Paro, then drive to Thimphu. In the event that you arrive by land, drive for around five hours to Thimphu after crossing the border from India at Phuentsholing or Jaigaon. Visit Tachog Lhakhang to observe a historic bridge built from iron chains used in bygone times.
  • As soon as you arrive in Thimphu, take a trip to Changlimithang stadium to watch the Bhutanese sport of archery. From daylight to night, matches are being played.
  • After that, stroll to Coronation Park, a peaceful area with a walking Buddha statue, and stop at Zangto Pelri Lhakhang, one of the principal temples that local Bhutanese like visiting. Roll the prayer wheels for the benefit of all living things.
  • After your trip, relax. You can choose to celebrate your arrival in Bhutan at the renowned Mojo Park nightclub or another one of Thimphu’s well-liked locations.

Day 2Thimphu-Wangdue/Punakha

  • Drive to Buddha Dordenma popularly knowm as Buddha point, the enormous statue of the Buddha atop a valley, in the early morning, and then go to a stunning city viewpoint.
  • Continue to the wild animal refuge to witness the takin, Bhutan’s well-known national animal, as well as other forest residents.
  • Drop to the Clock Tower Square in the center, then go down Norzin Lam Street while observing the traffic police signaling at intersections. The only capital city in the world without traffic lights is Thimphu.
  • Finish your walk at the handicraft market, where you may browse and purchase affordable souvenirs from Bhutan. Continue your tour to the Folk Heritage Museum to see the display on Bhutanese traditional rural life (closed on Sunday, alternatively visit Simply Bhutan museum).
  • A tour of the venerable Dechen Phodrang monastery with a view of the Thimphu valley. The majestic Tashichho dzong castle, the seat of the king and government, is also visible from here. Transfer to Wangdue or Punakha in the afternoon over the Dochu-la pass (3010 m), stopping in at the royal temple Druk Wangyel lhakhang if time allows.

Day 3Wangdue/Punakha-Paro

  • Short hike in the morning that offers stunning views of the valley and its terraced paddy fields leads to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten.
  • You may choose to go rafting on the Mo Chhu (easily accessible) or Pho Chhu (excitingly challenging) rivers. Continue your tour by seeing Punakha Dzong, also known as the “Palace of the Great Happiness,” which was the winter residence of the Bhutanese monarchs and is the most elaborately decorated fortress in the entire kingdom.
  • Short stroll to the Chhimmy Lhakhang Temple, which is dedicated to the “Divine Madman” saint Drukpa Kunley, who is said to have taught Buddhism through singing, drinking, and scandalous sexual antics in the 15th century. Houses positioned along the path to the temple are adorned with phallic symbols in remembrance of the saint’s antics. The fertility-boosting reputation of the temple draws childless couples.
  • Visit Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang nunnery, which is located on a hill top that overlooks the valley and features stupa in Bhutanese and Nepali styles, if time allows.
  • Drive to Paro in the afternoon.

Day 4Paro

  • The tour’s unquestionable high point is the hike to Taktsang Gomba (The Tiger’s Nest). Despite the climb’s appearance of difficulty, it is immensely rewarding. You can cut it short in the café with a lovely view of the temple if you don’t feel particularly strong. If you still have the energy, you could climb up to Zangtopelri Lhakhang to see Tiger’s Nest from above! Depending on the weather, your fitness level, and your tastes, you might think about trekking in the morning or early afternoon.
  • Drive down to Paro town and be amazed at the historic traditional bridge below the Paro Dzong. Next, visit the National Museum in Ta dzong, the watchtower guarding the Paro castle below from intruders. Here, you can snap lovely pictures with a castle in the background while wearing Bhutanese clothing.
  • The Paro airport perspective is still ahead. You might witness planes landing and departing off, depending on the timetable. The runway in Paro is renowned for being one of the toughest of all the international airports in the world.
  • Visit the Zangtopelri lhakhang in Bondey’s village, a stunning new temple with exquisite decorations, if you have the time, or the Dzongdrakha lhakhang, an ancient temple perched on the rock cliffs that is frequently compared to Tiger’s Nest in terms of beauty and is infrequently visited by other tourists. Enjoy your final night in Bhutan.
  • It is optional to arrange a mask dance performance and a traditional meal in a nearby farmhouse.

Day 5Departure

  • If you have the time, you can drive to Drukyel dzong to visit a recently restored castle and the sacred Jomolhari mountain’s summit in good visibility.
  • After that, you may either take a flight out of Paro or drive for around 5 hours to the land border at Phuentsholing.
